Children's place coupon $10 off $30: How to Choose the Best Fabric for Clothes

Whether you're walking into a fabric store for a DIY project, or shopping for clothes, choosing the right fabric is never easy.  It's especially tricky when shopping for young children and tweens, because they can be so particular about the way fabric feels against their skin.  Here's a handy guide that will hopefully make things easier for you.
Cotton comes from the cotton plant.  It's cheap, easy to clean, and comfortable.  Unfortunately, it easily stretches and loses it's shape.  It's also susceptible to wearing out over time.
Denim comes from cotton fabric that has been woven in such a way as to produce a diagonal ribbing.   Very stiff and sturdy.  The name is derived from the French, "serge de Nimes" which refers to the city of "Nimes." Fades and wears well, which is why it's so widely used in jeans.
Flannel is lightweight and soft.  Great for cold weather garments.  Often made from wool, cotton, or synthetic fiber.  Can be brushed to make it softer.  Very popular during the grunge rock era of the 1990s.
Hemp is made from the stem of the marijuana plant, but does not contain narcotics.  It's texture is similar to linen, does well with water, but has a tendency to wrinkle.
Linen is a lightweight fabric that breaths well in hot weather.  Can look both casual and neat.  It's a natural fiber that comes from the flax plant... same place where flax seeds come from. The downside is that it wrinkles very easily and requires gentle washing.
Nylon was invented as a synthetic replacement for silk, it was used in WW2 to make parachutes and tires.  It was also used instead of silk to make women's stockings, which is where the term "nylons" originated.  Nylon is strong and inexpensive and is easily washed.
Polyester tends to be very comfortable. It washes well and doesn't require special care. We tend to use many polyester blend knits because they take color extremely well, they're durable, and the dyes don't fade. Because polyester blends are man-made, they don't breath as well as cotton. However, for a twirly dress, that doesn't really matter.  There's plenty of room for air to go in an out, and given the softness and durability, it really is the ideal fabric. Today's polyester blends have come a long way from the polyester leisure suits of the 1970s.  Rejoice!
Satin can be lightweight or heavy weight.  It tends to be glossy in appearance and is smooth, silky, and flowy.
Silk has been around since ancient China.  It's incredibly smooth and lustrous, and comes from the cocoon of the mulberry moth.  It's very lightweight, flowy and, of course, silky!  Ideal for draping and lining.
Remember the 90s?  Spandex, also known as lycra, is a synthetic fabric that stretches well.  It's perfect for exercise clothes, but because it is skin tight, it hides nothing.  Today, it's also used in skinny jeans to make them form fitting. It's also used in polyester blend knits to make them more stretchy.
Rayon comes from cellulose fibre.  It drapes well because it is lightweight, but still heavier than cotton.  Rayon is manufactured fabric from natural fibers.  This makes it part natural, and part synthetic.  It is often used to mimic the feel of silk, wool, and linen.  It's soft, comfortable and smooth.  Rayon is idea for hot and humid climates because it doesn't insulate body heat.  The downside is that it requires careful washing and is not very durable.
Wool comes from sheep and goat hair.  It's very warm, but can also be itchy.  Mohair is a variation of wool that comes from Angora goats.

Children's Place coupon code: 10 Tips for dressing a sensory sensitive child

My 5 year old son just informed me that he will no longer wear his Thomas the Train sweater, because it is too itchy.
He takes after me.
When I was a kid, clothing tags were my enemies. I used to get my mother’s sewing scissors and cut the tags out as soon as I got new clothes. I preferred hand-me-downs from my sisters, because the worn fabric was softer and the tags were already removed.
Exposed elastic bands were too tight on me, even though I was a skinny kid, and left painful red marks on my skin. I never wanted to wear skirts, because my tights were too itchy, and if I didn’t wear tights under the skirt, my knees became cold and achy, even in warm weather.
Getting dressed can be a battle for children who are highly sensitive or who have neurological differences. Here are 10 ideas to reduce the stress while getting dressed.

1. Heavy Work

Crawling through TunnelsStart with heavy work. Warming up the muscles with exercise is a great way to reduce sensitivity. Occupational therapists define“heavy work” as any activity that puts deep pressure on the joints of the upper body, such as pushing a laundry basket or crawling through a tunnel.

2. Soft Clothing

Soft Clothing
Know exactly what type of clothing to look for: soft, breathable fabrics, tagless, covered elastic bands, no metal parts, no heavy embroidery or applique. http://children-place-coupon-code.blogspot.com/ offers thousands of soft clothing items for your sensory sensitive child.
Additionally accept hand-me-downs whenever possible and shop at used clothing stores for softer fabrics.

Tagless Clothing3. Find Alternatives

Believe your child when he or she says that clothing is irritating. Use the opportunity to find a solution to the problem together. Wearing a tagless undershirt increases overall comfort; substituting cotton jersey leggings for tights makes wearing a skirt much more pleasant.

Darth Vader4. Let Your Child Choose

Allow the child to select clothing as often as possible. My 5 year old sometimes likes to dress all in black “just like Darth Vader.” At other times he wants to dress in a roller coaster or monster truck theme. This type of experimentation increases his sensory tolerance.

5. Find The Right Undergarments

Make sure that socks and underwear are as comfortable as possible. An entire day can be ruined by rebellious socks that get bunched up inside shoes or underwear that chafes around the hips. Children's Place makes seamless socks and underwear that are designed to minimize irritation for sensitive children.
Some families, including mine, find that tagless boys’ boxer briefs with covered waistbands are the most comfortable for boys and girls – the elastic bands around the groin area can be very painful on standard boys’ and girls’ briefs. My kids also prefer socks that are slightly too small because they fit more tightly and don’t bunch up inside their shoes.

6. Don’t Always Dress For The Weather

DDressing for the weatherBe flexible about dressing for the weather. My 10 year old son insists on wearing long sleeves and long pants all year round, because he does not like the feeling of air on his arms and legs. When he was a toddler, he refused to put on a coat or mittens on the coldest days of winter.
My strategy is to allow him to choose his clothing, but I carry the back-up clothing for the moment when the reality of the outside temperature hits him. “Oh, you’re sweaty and overheated? Here’s a short-sleeve t-shirt.” “You’re shivering. Here’s a hat. Oh, now your fingers are cold? I have some mittens right here.” It works every time.

7. Reinforce social norms

Wet ShoesIt’s not OK to walk down the street naked in any weather. Make sure that your child understands the difference between socially appropriate and inappropriate dress. Point out how other people are dressed when you are running errands or at school.
Explain the natural consequences of inappropriate dress such as, “You weren’t wearing your rain boots, so your shoes got wet” or “We can’t get ice cream, because the sign says you have to wear a shirt in the store.”

8. Open-toe or closed-toe?

FootwearSometimes the only way to get a child to wear any shoes at all is to allow sandals or flip-flops. But there’s a downside. I’ve known many children over the years who refuse to give up their sandals at the end of summer.
Wearing sandals can prevent certain activities – indoor playgrounds require socks and outdoor playgrounds usually have wood chips, which can splinter inside the sandal. It’s also unsafe to run or climb in sandals.
These physical activities are absolutely necessary for highly sensitive children. Therefore, I ask my children to wear sneakers with socks unless we are going to the beach, as an extension of my lessons about social norms.

9. Choose your sleepwear carefully

Where to Find Weighted Blankets
Choose pajamas and blankets to get a good night’s rest. Tired, cranky kids are hypersensitive and my kids are both night-wakers. My older son now uses an eight-pound weighted blanket at night; but my younger son still refuses any blanket, and sometimes he wakes up because he’s cold.
If he wears warmer fleece pajamas, he gets sweaty and wakes up because of the wetness. I finally solved the problem by having him wear his usual cotton knit pajamas with a footed fleece sleeper on top. The breathable cotton fabric prevented the clamminess on his skin, and the fleece sealed in his warmth, and he started sleeping through the night.

10. Use Vitamins

VitaminsChoose vitamin and mineral supplements to reduce sensitivity. There is substantial evidence demonstrating that vitamin and mineral deficiencies can contribute to sensitivities. Highly sensitive children often have self-limited diets as well, which means they need extra nutrition. Consult with your child’s pediatrician about the vitamin combination that will work best for your child.

You have bought the new backpack, school supplies and lunch box — and now it is time to tackle back-to-school shoe shopping! Let us help mark this off your to-do list.
We chatted with doctors who share tips for every age and activity level so you can buy the right shoes for your kids. Visit Children's Place to see amazing new arrival items.

Back-to-school means heading to the shoe store to buy some cool new pumped-up kicks for your kids. Many of today’s kid’s shoes are built with their active lifestyles in mind, but make sure you keep the following tips in mind to avoid wasting money on the wrong types of shoes.

Tips for buying kid's shoes that fit
Start your shoe search at a store that has a salesperson that can correctly measure your child’s foot size. For younger kids, it is important to make sure that there is plenty of room for the toes.

“Parents should look for shoes that are supportive and feature rounded toe boxes to give the toes more room for movement [which aligns] the feet properly for optimal foot health,” says Phil Vasyli, leading Australian podiatrist and founder of good-for-you shoe brands Vionic, Orthaheel and Dr. Andrew Weil Integrative Footwear.

Most of us will find that one foot is slightly larger than the other, so make sure your child tries on both shoes and that you buy the shoes that fit the bigger foot.

Bring a pair of socks and have your child stand up with both shoes on. A good fitting rule to go on is that there should be about 1/2 inch of space (about the size of the tip of your index finger) between the longest toe (which is either the big toe or second toe) and the front of the shoe.

Dr. Sonu Ahluwalia, M.D., clinical chief of orthopedic surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, tells SheKnows that parents must also consider the width of the shoe.

“Kids' feet tend to be wider when they are younger, and as the foot grows, the length proportionately catches up to the width. So you want a shoe to accommodate a wider foot, and you need it to not be too restrictive or too tight through the arch,” he says.

Dr. Ahluwalia says that children’s shoes do not need to be broken in and they should be comfortable from the start. Have your child walk around to make sure the shoes feel good on their feet. “Make sure that they fit well from the start with adequate room to accommodate the foot, not only in length but also in width,” he says.

Lastly, use this tip to keep the foot odor at bay. “Seek shoes that are breathable, as the active feet of children are prone to perspiration,” says Vasyli. “Canvas or leather shoes allow the foot to breathe, and it’s best to avoid man-made materials such as plastic.“

How often should you buy new shoes for kids?
how to find the right shoes

When should you buy new shoes for your child? “Feet should be measured monthly the first year, every two months between the ages of 12 months and 24 months, every three months from 24 to 36 months and every six months thereafter,” says Dr. Ahluwalia.

If your child’s shoe looks or feels tight or has lost some of its arch support, it’s time for a new pair of shoes. If your child has a growth spurt, you may find yourself buying shoes more frequently.

“Since the older child's feet are not growing as rapidly, the shoe construct needs to be good enough to last the six months or longer that the child may use it for,” he says.

You also must take into account the activity level of the child, for example if they walk to school or use their shoes for after-school activities you may have to buy new shoes at least every six months.

What about slip-on shoes? Or Velcro shoes?
“Slip-ons can be a great shoe option for children, provided that they meet the requirements in regards to breathability, support and proper fit,” says Vasyli.

Consider buying your child a pair of slip-on shoes, such as Vans slip-on shoes, but just make sure he or she also has a good pair of athletic shoes with laces as well, especially for gym class or an after-school sports event. If you are only buying one pair of shoes, athletic shoes with laces are the best bet because they give the foot more stability because they don’t stretch out as slip-on shoes tend to.

Athletic shoes with Velcro (instead of laces) are a good option for younger kids who want to put shoes on themselves without waiting for you to tie them.

Most schools don’t allow flip-flops to be worn at school — and Vasyli said they are fine for short periods of time. “Parents should be aware that cheap flip-flops usually lack any kind of structure or support for the foot — not ideal shoes for children’s growing feet,” he said. “If flip-flops are the footwear of choice, it’s also important to choose pairs with strong yet flexible outsoles to protect the bottoms of children’s feet.”

Best shoes if your child has flat feet
“Most kids don't develop an arch till 16 months of age,” says Dr. Ahluwalia, saying that young children’s shoes typically don’t need arch support.

If your child nears kindergarten and the foot still looks flat when standing, you can consider using some arch supports for your child, such as Arch Angels Kid’s Arch Support Insoles.

These type of arch supports should work well for most children, but if your child complains of foot pain you can have your child evaluated for custom-made orthotics.

What about sport specific shoes?
Younger children will do fine wearing an athletic shoe with good support for a variety of sports and for gym class. As they get older, their needs will change and you will need to buy sport specific shoes, such as soccer cleats and baseball cleats.

“Younger kids typically just run around in their shoes. As kids grow, they may be involved in specific sports and these sports may require certain special shoes,” says Dr. Ahluwalia.

“Every sport by its nature has certain requirements of the footwear — for example, traction in track, stability in basketball and wear resistance in court sports. Talk to the coach to figure out what's best for your child. Remember though, a proper fit is still essential,” he says.

Girl versus boy shoes
Will your son have different shoe needs than your daughter? Possibly — it depends on their activity level.

“Most boys are rough and tough on their shoes, which means that you need to match that with the demand for durable shoes. Don't waste your money on stylish shoes for daily wear,” says Dr. Ahluwalia. “Also, the foot grows in proportion to the rest of the body which means that the shoes may get tighter quicker during the growth spurt which occurs earlier in girls than boys.

“Boys usually require a wider fitting than girls,“ adds Vasyli.

Buying Athletic Shoes and Socks For Children

Buying shoes for your child that fit properly is extremely important.  Unfortunately, a recent study found that a majority of kids wear shoes that are too small, which put them at risk for developing serious foot deformities, such as bunions.
Considering many socks at Childrn's Place. Using Children's place coupon $10 off $30 to save money .

Dr. Carol Frey, Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at UCLA and Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery at West Coast Sports Performance in Manhattan Beach, California, says parents should remember the following when shopping for their children's shoes:
Shop at the end of the day: Shop when your child's feet are at their largest (either at the end of the day, or after a run or sporting event).
Measure both feet, standing up: Measure your child's feet when they are standing up bearing their full weight. Measure both feet in case they vary in size. Choose the shoes that fit the larger foot.
Measure and fit with sports-specific socks. Your child should be wearing the specific sock that he will ultimately wear with the shoes. Note: This is a reversal of the normal fitting process in most athletic shoe stores, where socks are purchased as an "add-on" after shoes have been fitted. Ones that are padded, such as Thorlo socks,* are ideal, especially for wearing with cleated shoes.
Allow for wiggle room: There should be a half-inch from the end of the longest toe to the end of the shoe so that your child is able to wiggle all of her toes. Don't press with your thumb on the greater toe to estimate fit because it activates a reflex that causes your child to curl the bigger toe, giving the wrong impression that there is enough space. In an ideal world, the length of the shoe should exceed the actual length of your child's foot by at least 10 millimeters to ensure that enough space is provided for the greater and lesser toes.
Lace the shoes properly: For maximum support, use the top eyelet on the shoe and run the laces through twice for a snugger fit. Don't tie the laces too tightly, as that can cause injury to nerves and tendons on the top of the foot.
Check for snug heels: If the heels don't fit snuggly, they will pull up out of the shoe (pistoning) and your child will be more likely to get blisters.
Have you child walk in the shoes: Allow your child some time to walk around the store in the shoes and ask them how the shoes feel. When she takes them off, check her feet for any red spots or areas of irritation. Inspect the inside of the shoe for any extra material, glue or irregular stitching, which may cause chafing.
Expect immediate comfort: Most importantly, the shoes should be comfortable right away. Shoes shouldn't need to be "broken in" to feel right.
Remember: younger children may not be able to tell you how a shoe fits and feels. They may simply say something hurts, with few details. It is important to ask, since they may not offer the information. In some cases, the pain may be the result of something as small as some extra fabric inside or socks bunching up. In very young children, whose feet tend to be thicker across the top, shoes may appear to fit because the toes have room, but still be too tight through the bridge of the foot or cause your child's toes to be scrunched up inside.
Selecting the right shoe also means picking the right kind of shoe:
The best materials: Leather, suede and canvas are the most durable and breathable materials for athletic shoes. Synthetic materials don't allow the foot to "breathe" and may even contribute to skin diseases and foot odor.
Choose the proper shoe for a particular sport: Shoes are designed specifically based on the demands of that sport. For instance, running shoes are designed for forward movement and have extra cushioning, while tennis shoes are meant to support side-to-side motion
Selecting cleats

Cleats can cause problems in young players, especially ages 9-13, when there are not enough cleats on the heel. This can lead to excess pressure and heel pain. Look for shoes with multiple cleats on the heel to help alleviate this problem. In order to reduce knee and ankle injuries, it may help to choose shoes with shorter cleats on them, no more than a half inch long for younger players.
If the shoe doesn't fit

Poor fitting shoes can cause a number of problems, explains Dr. Frey. The increased pressure may lead to:
Blisters
Curling or clawing of the toes
Bunions
Corns
Calluses
Pinched nerves
Ingrown toenails.
Besides causing pain and discomfort that can affect athletic performance, the wrong size shoes can result in foot problems and cause further injuries down the road.
If your child has foot pain that persists 12 hours after she takes off her shoes, you should see a doctor in case there is a potentially more serious problem.

Orthotics: popular but unnecessary?

While orthotics (shoe inserts prescribed by orthopedists or podiatrists) are the latest rage, Dr. Frey feels that in most casesthey are unnecessary. Given the quality design of most shoes today, and assuming you buy the proper shoe for your child and get a correct fit, you don't need to spend money for orthotics.
Children who are likely to benefit the most from orthotics, says Dr. Frey, are those who:
Over-pronate (their feet tip in)
Have flat feet (Note, however, that a new study has raised serious questions about whether orthotics are necessary for flat feet or that they will help athletic performance).

Are experiencing arch pain or strain
For children needing extra ankle support, look for shoes with good heel stability. "People with high arches tend to have more ankle sprains/rolls, and need a stable shoe like a high top or high profile shoe," explains Dr. Frey.
For additional information visit The Institute for Preventive Foot Health (IPFH) is a non-profit private foundation committed to raising awareness about the importance of caring for the feet through education, research and the identification of methods demonstrated by clinical research to prevent, treat and manage painful conditions and diseases affecting the feet, mobility, functional status and quality of life.
